AIRBORNE MISSILE MAINTENANCE SQUADRON
ALUMNI REUNION APRIL 14 – 17 2008
The 2008 AMMS reunion is behind us and we are looking forward to the reunion of 2010. We again feel that we had a successful reunion here in the Barksdale AFB, LA (Bossier City/Shreveport, LA) community. During our meeting session at the picnic, on Tuesday April 15th, the vote was almost unanimous for the reunion to be held again at Barksdale AFB. There were some last minute problems however, as usual with this type activity. Some of our non-retirees had problems getting through the base gate, although a list had been provided to the Security Forces (you know right hand left hand story). Hopefully this problem will be resolved for the 2010 reunion. There were a total of 116 registered with 9 at the last minute unable to attend.
The hotel, picnic and dining facility accommodations were great. The Boomtown Casino and Hotel Staff provided exceptional accommodations and service and were complimented by several attendees. The Picnic Area was exceptionally clean and the weather cooperated throughout the day. Although not known by many of the attendees, the facility where the Dinner would be held was not decided until Monday the 14th of April, because of the Commander needing The Club (the Officers Club as we know it) for a function. However; we just moved the Dinner to the old Enlisted Club (NCO Club). This worked out great as we were the only ones in the facility.
The first day, registration went of like clock work with several local missileers and their wives assisting. After registration everyone went to the hospitality suite (Hosted by Gary Jansonius and his wife Lila) and visited. A great big thanks Jan and Lila.
The Picnic on 15 April, was great with plenty of food for everyone: The food consisted of: barbeque brisket, smoked sausage, baked beans and potato salad with a variety of beer and soft drinks. Jim (a fellow Missileer) and Suzy Loar provided the sound system) with Suzy singing (accompanied by Buck Leach on occasion).
The Dinner, on April 16, I think went off great with plenty of food for everyone. The evening was opened by a social hour followed by the Posting of the Colors by the Barksdale AFB Honor Guard. The meal consisted of: fried catfish, baked chicken, roast beef, fruit salad, mashed potatoes, rice pilaf and green beans. Our guest speaker for the occasion was the current Munitions Maintenance Squadron Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Mason, who gave a terrific presentation on the present weapon systems, relating them to previous systems such as the Hound Dog and Quail. A drawing was conducted for several gifts provided for the occasion. Again, Jim and Suzy Loar provided the sound system and music. A great big thanks to Jim and Suzy.
On Thursday April 17, Tom and Shirlie Milam at the Boomtown Casino Breakfast Buffet hosted a departure breakfast. For those that were able to attend, I’m sure they enjoyed this as well. Thanks Tom and Shirlie.
In closing, I thank everyone for attending and hope you had as much fun as I did. Thank Buck, Jack, Gary (Jan) and Lila, Tom and Shirlie and Jim and Susie. I hope to see all of the 2008 attendees again in 2010 along with many more. Remember those who have passed away and keep Ron Soldner up to date on all issues concerning the AMMS Missileers.
